About Charles

Charles McKenzie is a public servant with a long history in our community. A graduate of Bethune-Cookman College, he is an educator who has worked in the Pinellas, Sarasota, and Manatee County Public Schools for twenty-five years and was appointed by Governor Lawton Chiles to the Task Force on Special Curriculum in Public Education.

Charles McKenzie is the only candidate in this race who has lived, worked and served in every part of our district. Many of the people of District 55 do not need to get to know Charles; he has been in the trenches fighting for affordable housing, civil rights, quality health care, safer neighborhoods and voting rights for his entire life.

Charles McKenzie has political experience on the state and national level; he has advocated in Washington, D.C. on behalf of federal education funding and Florida's small businesses. As the Statewide Coordinator for the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, Charles has worked throughout Florida to advocate for civil rights for all people. He is a strong supporter of equality and against discrimination in all its forms. As our state representative, Charles McKenzie will fight for all of us - from Saint Petersburg across the bridge and into Palmetto, Bradenton, Tallevast, Sarasota and all points in between.

Charles McKenzie is married and currently resides in Saint Petersburg with his wife, Lorna, and their son, Theo. He also has three adult children: Charles III, Delores and Latricia. He is a member of the Greater Pinellas Point Civic Association and is the Vice-President of the South Saint Petersburg Democratic Club.
